<br />MINUTES <br />City of San Leandro City Council Special Meeting-March 15, 2005 <br /> <br />Page 2 <br /> <br />Councilmember Santos recalled that he and Councilman Glaze were the "new kids on the <br />block" when they were both elected to the Council in 1984. He listed some of Councilman <br />Glaze's many accomplishments while in office and thanked him for being a longtime friend <br />and colleague. <br /> <br />City Manager Jermanis commented on staffs respect for the manner in which Councilman <br />Glaze comports himself with staff and his fellow members on the Council and for his ability <br />to see the "big picture." He thanked the Glaze family for their help and support to the City <br />family. <br /> <br />City Attorney Williams commented that she has had the pleasure of knowing Councilman <br />Glaze for many years, both as an employee for the City of Oakland and as a Councilmember <br />in San Leandro. She thanked him and wished him all the best. <br /> <br />Mayor Young commented that she and Councilman Glaze are the last two members <br />remaining on the Council from the 1996 election. She noted that Councilman Glaze has <br />served as vice mayor an unprecedented seven times and has the distinction of being the <br />youngest vice mayor to serve on the San Leandro Council. Mayor Young thanked <br />Councilman Glaze for his trust in her, for serving as vice mayor for four years during her term <br />as Mayor. She thanked the Glaze family for their support of her and the Council. <br /> <br />3. INSTALLATION OF NEW CITY COUNCILMEMBERS <br /> <br />The Honorable Peggy Hora, Judge of the Alameda County Superior Court, administered the <br />Oath of Office to newly-elected Councilmembers Surlene G. Grant, Joyce Rutledge <br />Starosciak and Anthony B. "Tony" Santos. <br /> <br />Councilmember Grant stated that she is pleased and grateful to have the opportunity to serve <br />another term on the City Council, and she "stands on the shoulders" of the many great people <br />who came before her and who have worked to make a difference in this City, her ancestors <br />and family members, and her supporters. She introduced and thanked her family. <br />Councilmember Grant commented that her grandmother passed away three weeks prior to the <br />election, and she thanked her supporters for continuing her campaign for her during a very <br />difficult time. She noted the many challenges faced by the Council, with little time to address <br />them, and paraphrased a poem by Dr. Benjamin Mays. <br /> <br />Councilmember Starosciak commented that the November 2, 2004 District 4 Council race <br />was the first election in San Leandro history to culminate in a run-off. She noted that the <br />extraordinary circumstances required extraordinary resources, and she thanked God for His <br />blessings and for the lessons of humility, personal challenge and reliance on others. <br />Councilmember Starosciak thanked her husband, children and parents and recognized some <br />of the 120 volunteers who worked on her campaign. She expressed gratitude for the over 200 <br />different donors that contributed to her campaign. <br /> <br />Councilmember Santos thanked Judge Peggy Hora for administering the Oath of Office. He <br />thanked his wife and children and announced that his grandson, Tyler, will be running for <br />City Council in 2014! He thanked his supporters and those who worked on his campaign. He <br />
