<br />MINUTES Page 2 <br />City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-August 1, 2005 <br /> <br />Councilmember Nardine thanked Police Chief Kitchen, City Manager Jermanis, City staff, <br />Police officers, the supporting cities, and especially Officer Dan Niemi, for going above and <br />beyond the call of duty for the City of San Leandro. <br /> <br />Councilmember Starosciak thanked Police Chief Kitchen for being a face of strength and <br />courage for the San Leandro Police force. She commended City staff for the support <br />provided to the community this week. <br /> <br />Councilmember Stephens expressed his pride with the manner in which the City's <br />administration handled the events of this very difficult week. He thanked the Mayor for her <br />comments at Officer Niemi's service and complimented the Police Department staff for <br />being the "thin blue line" that never waivers and keeps evil and violence from the <br />community's doorstep. <br /> <br />Councilmember Santos commented regarding today's heart-rendering ceremony and the <br />large turnout at both the church service and in the City streets for the police motorcade. He <br />spoke regarding the need to protect our public safety personnel. He expressed appreciation <br />to City Manager Jermanis for keeping him apprised of the developments while he was 2,200 <br />miles away in Hawaii. <br /> <br />City Manager J ermanis commented that this has been a very difficult week for the City of <br />San Leandro and the entire community. He noted that the burden of being spokespeople fell <br />to the Police Chief and the Mayor, and he complimented Chief Kitchen and Mayor Young <br />for their handling of the press conferences and for their moving comments at Officer <br />Niemi's service. Mr. Jermanis noted that over 300 motorcycle officers from throughout the <br />state escorted Officer Niemi to the church service. He was told by police officers attending <br />the service that they were quite taken by the large community turnout along the motorcade <br />route, and they found the show of support by the community to be truly heart-warming. Mr. <br />J ermanis complimented Mayor Young for her presentation at the service in speaking for the <br />community and the City Family. He commented that Chief Kitchen has been magnificent <br />in his representation of the department and that the San Leandro police officers in the <br />conduct of their duties have been encouraging to the community. Mr. Jermanis thanked the <br />City Official Family and the City Council, as well as the literally thousands of police <br />officers, firefighters and community members who attended the service to recognize the <br />contribution our police officers make to the City of San Leandro every day. He expressed <br />hope that the community can move on and hopefully prevent this type of tragedy from <br />happening in the future. <br /> <br />The City Council and members of the audience observed a moment of silence in honor and <br />memory of Officer Nels "Dan" Niemi. <br /> <br />3.
