CITY OF SAN LEANDRO MEMORANDUM DATE: December 4, 2006 TO: City Council John Jermanis, City Manager ~ SUBJECT PROJECT/PROJECT DESCRIPTION: BY: CONSIDERATION OF ORDINANCES ESTABLISHING CITY COUNCIL AND MAYORAL COMPENSA nON SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council review the attached ordinances, which will establish the monthly salary for a City Councilmember at $1,260 per month and establish the base salary for the Mayor at two times the Councilmember's salary, or $2,520 per month. BACKGROUND Compensation of the Mayor and City Council was last adjusted in January 2003. At that time, the City Council's salary was adjusted to its current level of $1,050 per month, and the Mayor's salary adjusted to three times the Council's salary, or $3,150 per month. The ordinance establishing the Council's salary also authorized payment of $30 per meeting for member of the Redevelopment Agency. It is proposed that the City Council's monthly salary be increased to $1,260 per month. This proposed increase is based upon the limits established by State law. A salary increase for City Councilmembers may not exceed 5% per year (not compounded) from the operative date of the last salary adjustment. Pursuant to the Guidelines Regarding the Setting of the Mayor's Salary, adopted by the City Council in 2002, the salary for the incoming Mayor will be set at two times the City Council's salary, or $2,520 per month. Current City Council Policy The City Council's current monthly pay is $1,050 per month. The increase to $1,260 per month is based on the provisions State law that limit increases to not more than 5% per year.
