<br />MINUTES Page 7 <br />City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Special Meeting-July 10, 2006 <br /> <br />9. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> <br />Councilmember Badger requested that tonight's meeting be adjourned in memory of Yvonne <br />Miranda, a woman whom he and his wife "adopted" and who was a close family friend. He <br />also commented on the passing of Hayward City Councilmember Matt Jimenez. <br /> <br />Councilmember Nardine commented on the outstanding job by the City on its fireworks <br />suppression efforts. She stated the importance of informing the community about these <br />efforts. Councilmember Nardine shared an article from a local newspaper in Costa Mesa, <br />reporting the increased cost each year of fireworks enforcement to their city. She suggested <br />that San Leandro also publicize the cost of its fireworks enforcement. Mr. Jermanis <br />commented that the Fire Chief reported the situation in San Leandro was much better than <br />last year and better than he observed it was in other nearby areas. He commented on the <br />overtime cost to the City of deployment of additional public safety staff and the annoyance <br />and frustration experienced by residents and their pets due to fireworks. <br /> <br />Councilmember Santos commented that he toured the community on 4th of July evening and <br />reported on the fireworks activity at Eastshore and Marina Faire. He noted that some of the <br />fireworks activity was corning from backyards. Councilmember Santos noted that the <br />problems will continue until all the cities in Alameda County ban the use of fireworks. <br /> <br />Vice Mayor Grant commented on the issue of cars for sale parked on city streets. She noted <br />that Contra Costa County has an ordinance which forbids parking cars for sale in the public <br />right-of-way and will forward information to the City Manager and City Attorney for possible <br />consideration by San Leandro. <br /> <br />Vice Mayor Grant commented that she would like to see a more timely turnaround of the <br />meeting minutes. <br /> <br />Vice Mayor Grant commented that this past weekend she visited a Chinese art gallery on <br />Washington Street on behalf of the Mayor and the City. The invitation was extended by the <br />former ambassador of China to the Mayor's Office. She met Mr. Wang, a famous <br />calligrapher from China, and was presented with a book of his artwork. Vice Mayor Grant <br />commented that Mr. Wang will create a piece of artwork for the City which will read, <br />"Everything under the heavens belongs to the public." <br /> <br />Vice Mayor Grant announced tonight's meeting would be adjourned in memory of Patty <br />Price, a local anti-discrimination lawyer who gained fame for the lawsuit against Denny's <br />Restaurant; Matt Jimenez, who had been recently re-elected to the Hayward City Council; and <br />Yolanda Miranda, a close personal friend of Council member OB Badger's family. <br /> <br />10.
