Councilmember Starosciak thanked Carolyn Knudtson for the <br />opening of the San Leandro Aquatics Centcr and David Bohne and his staff for the opening of <br />the Washington Manor Branch Library. She expressed overwhelming joy and honor to be <br />able to represent District 4, and she thanked Ms. Knudtson, Mr. Bohne and their staffs for a <br />remarkable weekend. Council member Starosciak commented that as a follow-up to the <br />September 24 Union Pacific incident, the Mayor wrote a letter to UP, and a date has been set <br />for a meeting between UP representatives and Heron Bay HOA to try to prevent similar <br />situations in the future. Councilmember Starosciak commented that she traveled to <br />Sacramento to see new Senator Ellen Corbett and Assemblymember Mary Hayashi take their <br />oaths of office. She noted that Assemblymember Hayashi has been appointed the Assistant <br />Majority Whip and is also on several important committees. <br /> <br />Couneilmember Stephens echoed Councilmember Starosciak's sentiments regarding the <br />Aquatics Center and Washington Manor Branch Library events. He also complimented the <br />staff on the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, December 1. Councilmember Stephens <br />thanked Mayor Young for purchasing the tree used in the ceremony. Councilmember <br />Stephens expressed his personal appreciation to Councilmember Nardine for her many years <br />of dedicated service to San Leandro and for her creativity, fresh perspective, and bringing <br />solutions to the table. He also complimented Mr. Jermanis for his approach to the Lewis <br />Avenue problem as a public nuisance. Councilmember Stephens stated he is looking forward <br />to a positive outcome soon. <br /> <br />Councilmember Santos commended Councilmember Nardine on her 25 years of public <br />service. He stated that he has enjoyed working with her over the past six years on the Council <br />and wished her the best in the future. Councilmember Santos commented on the terrific <br />events ofthe past week and hoped for more such events in the future. <br /> <br />Mayor Young commented that although she and Councilmember Nardine have not always <br />seen "eye to eye" on issues, she appreciated her differing ideas and approaches and thoughtful <br />insights. Mayor Young expressed appreciation for the time when she almost fainted, and <br />Couneilmember Nardine came to her aid. She congratulated Councilrnember Nardine on her <br />retirement from the City Council and wished her well in her new home. Mayor Young <br />commented that she sent a handwrittcn note and a big box of Ghirardelli chocolate on behalf <br />of the City and the City Council to Senator-elect Ellen Corbett. She suggested the same be <br />done for Assemblymember-elect Mary Hayashi. Mayor Young also commented that she <br />would present a City flag to Senator Corbett at the Board and Commission event on <br />December 11, and a flag can be sent to Assemblymember Hayashi as well. <br /> <br />13.
