Authorize staiI to proceed with the donation of approximately 230
computers and monitors requiring disposal.

Councilmember Grant commented that this is a great idea. She asked
vvhether any left-over cOlnputers could be sent overseas to one of San
Leandro's sister cities or to other countries in need. Mr. Jermanis noted that
the School District will have first choice of the available computers. The
remainder will be offered to community-based organizations and other
interested organizations.

Councilmember Badger pointed out that one of the reasons for giving the
computers away was to avoid the cost of disposal. He expressed concern
about the cost involved in shipping computers to foreign countries.

Councilmember Grant commented that there are organizations that regularly
ship goods to other countries, and there may be opportunities to use their
container space to ship computers.

Vice Mayor Glaze noted concerns with the proper disposal of computers that
are shipped to foreign countries and the docunlentation required by those
countries.

Councilmember Stephens commented that the computers in question would
probably not be suitable for business or education. However, it could
provide an opportunity for a family that otherwise could not afford a
computer to have one at home. Councihnember Stephens suggested the City
consider an "adopt a computer" progranl for local families.

It was the consensus of the Council to authorize staff to proceed with
the donation of approximately 230 computers and monitors requiring
disposal.
