IRV Update - 3

1. Do nothing, and hold the general municipal election in June 2008 and runoff election in
November 2008, as was done in 2006. IRV would not be used, so the City would not be
dependent on the availability ofIRV.

2. Change the general municipal election to November 2008 if the certification ofIRV
appears imminent. As mentioned previously, the ordinance changing the City's general
election date should be adopted in October or November 2007.

The suggestion has been raised in the past to place a charter amendment on the ballot, asking the
voters to return to plurality elections. A ballot measure placed on the June or November 2008
ballot and passed by the voters could be effective beginning with the Council election in 2010.

CONCLUSION

In the coming months, staff will keep the Committee apprised of the progress made toward IRV
system certification, and of the work of the IRV implementation group.

Attachment

Draft flyer: How it works: Instant RunoflVoting
