IN THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO RESOLUTION NO. 2007-097 (1071/2850) RESOLUTION ADOPTING THE CITY OF Y ANGCHUN, GUANGDONG PROVINCE, PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA AS A FRIENDSHIP CITY WHEREAS, the "People-to-People Program" was inaugurated by the President ofthe United States in 1956 to establish greater friendship and understanding between the peoples of the United States and other nations through the medium of direct personal contact; and WHEREAS, since that time, the City of San Leandro has joined with cities in Brazil, the Azores Islands of Portugal and the Republic of the Philippines in Sister City affiliations, reflecting the broad diversity of cultures from other nations that make up the community of San Leandro; and WHEREAS, today, one ofthe fastest growing ethnic populations in San Leandro is the Asian community, with over twenty-five percent of the population being Asian, the largest number being Chinese or Chinese-American; and WHEREAS, in order to bring a greater understanding and appreciation of the Asian culture to San Leandro and provide opportunities for educational, cultural and potential economic development exchanges for our community, members of San Leandro's Asian community have asked that San Leandro enter into a Friendship City affiliation with Yangchun, Guangdong Province, People's Republic of China; and WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro, through its City Council, recognizes and endorses this proposal with the hope that it will lead to a lasting friendship between this city and the people ofYangchun, China. NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of San Leandro does RESOLVE as follows: That this Council, on behalf of the people of San Leandro, does hereby adopt the city of Yangchun, Guangdong Province, People's Republic of China as a Friendship City and extends an invitation to the government and people of Yangchun to participate with San Leandro as its Friendship City for the purpose of creating greater mutual understanding between the peoples of our two great cities and nations.
