SHAPE UP SAN LEANDRO KICK-OFF MEETING NOTES <br />Friday, September 14, 2007 <br />WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS <br />Attendees: Michael Gregory, COSL; Maureen Shapiro, SLUSD; Patti Senna, SLUSD; David Lorden, <br />SLUSD; Carolyn Knudtson, COSL; Micki Cronin, COSL; Kathryn Boyle, KP; Sylvia Jimenez, KP; Gene <br />Calderon, County; Ana Apodaca, KP; Emily Kaplan, SLUSD; Diana Gentry, Chamber; Robin Michel, <br />SLUSD. <br />WHY WE ARE HERE <br />Trustee Katz and Council Member Gregory were inspired by a presentation by Tony Iton, PHD., <br />and by an article relaying the success of a program in Somerville, MA.; worked to bring agencies <br />currently working towards improving health in the SL community together to see what was <br />being done and what could be done; desire to inspire SL Community to eat healthier and move <br />more in incremental and measurable steps. <br />WHAT WE WILL ACCOMPLISH <br />Sharing of information, possibly a draft of what SHAPE UP SAN LEANDRO will look like. <br />WHAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY DOING TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THE SAN LEANDRO COMMUNITY <br />Each agency shared (in a nutshell) things they are currently doing, which include: <br />SLUSD: Connecting kids with health insurance; healthy habits classes; salad bar and fresh fruit in <br />all of the elementary schools; getting rid of sodas; working in a collaborative looking at <br />increasing protective services for youth at risk; October - walk to school day and month, <br />Bancroft field opening; grants for additional PE teachers at Middle Schools and garden <br />education. <br />CITY: Developed physical activity and nutrition policies and implemented then into all youth <br />programs and staff training programs; health and wellness fairs for community and seniors; <br />bringing in nutrition and physical activity information to youth sports, adult sports, aquatics and <br />seniors; 10,000 steps for employees; health and wellness information out via activity guide and <br />youth programs. <br />KAISER PERMANENTE: Community Health Initiative -Healthy Eating, Active Living; looking for <br />environmental change and policies that support that; several local partnerships: Boys and Girls <br />Club (possibly Photo Voice presentation next meeting), Girls Inc., Spectrum, SLUSD, Stepping <br />Stones, Davis St.; every 3 years select priority areas, the next one is "Reducing/preventing <br />obesity in children/adults; Farmer's Market to largest employer in So. County - Nummi. <br />COUNTY: Soda Free Summer; Team Up for Youth; financial support for other programs <br />CHAMBER: Will be doing a health summit. <br />
