MINUTES Page 8
City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-October 1, 2007
concerns regarding safety and expense to maintain the trees, as well as the lack of
documentation as to their historic significance. The property owner would be given the
option to remove the trees if he deemed it necessary. Mr. Jermanis noted that in its
previous review of the City's tree ordinance, the Council had determined that trees on
private property were the responsibility of the owner.
Councilmember Souza asked how long Mr. Rogalia has owned the property and had
knowledge that the trees were on the historic landmarks list. Mr. Jermanis indicated
that Mr. Rogalia has owned the property for some time; however, when the landmarks
list was established, many of the property owners did not see the need to actively oppose
the listing of their properties.
Mayor Santos commented that the age of the trees did not warrant their listing as
landmarks. He pointed out the public safety issue posed by the trees.
Vice Mayor Grant made a motion to have the trees rescinded from landmark
designation. She supported Mr. Rogalia's concern for public safety, recalling the night
when redwood tree branches fell onto her car.
Councilmember Prola urged Mr. Rogalia not to cut healthy trees unless they pose a
safety hazard.
M/S/C Grant and Starosciak.
