City/SLUSD Liaison Committee Highlights
December 5, 2007
Page 2
Davis stated that he felt that there were additional costs incurred in meeting the City's
design and building location criteria for the academy. Mike Murphy stated that site cost
preparation increased by 50% or $2 million. Davis proposed that the City's equitable
share would be higher than that proposed by the City Manager. The City Manager stated
that this item could be discussed at the Joint Board/Council meeting scheduled for
January. Board Member Cassidy suggested that the gymnasium area may also be
appropriate for a City teen center. He pointed out that freed up dollars from the 9`~ Grade
Campus would go into modernization projects in the District. He also stated that
incorporation of public art into the campus would be worthwhile.
3. Continued Discussion Re ag rding Renovation of San Leandro High School Swimming
Pool
City Manager Jermanis distributed excerpts from a 2001 aquatic study which estimated
that renovation of the high school pool would cost $600,000. Engineering and
Transportation now estimates that the cost would be $900,000. Mr. Jermanis stated that
if the pool was renovated, it could be used by the high school, both City swim teams and
the general public. The pool would also be of high community value due to the
impending improvements to the PG&E parking lot and increased public access. The
proposed competitive swim pool at the Washington Manor Aquatic Center is estimated to
cost $2.5 million, with no funding currently identified. Board Member Cassidy asked for
a report with different options on the level of improvements to the pool, including one as
afull-service community pool. Mayor Santos supported the idea of the City funding the
high school pool renovations. Vice Mayor Grant stated that there is also strong support
for using those funds instead to build the Manor competitive pool. Board Member Hague
stated that the Muir School area needed to have their pool reopened.
4. Discussion of Burrell Field Renovation or Relocation Options
City Manager Jermanis reiterated that the renovations to Burrell Field are estimated to be
at $12 million. The reports on the feasibility of the Oyster Bay East Bay Regional Parks
site for atwenty-five acre complex are not yet completed. Mr. Jermanis did relate that
the consultants report that there may be problems with FAA's sixty foot height
requirement for development of the facility at Oyster Bay. There was general discussion
regarding the pros and cons of renovating Burrell Field versus locating it at Oyster Bay,
including wind temperature and access.
