NIINUTES Page 12 <br />City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-February 4, 2008 <br />Councilmember Starosciak thanked Vice Mayor Grant for attending the CMA meeting on her <br />behalf. Councilmember Starosciak acknowledged Senior Engineer Keith Cooke's expertise <br />and negotiating skills with the CMA, noting that the efforts of Mr. Cooke and the Engineering <br />and Transportation Department have ensured that San Leandro receives a good share of <br />transportation funding. She commented that Mr. Udemezue was recently quoted in the New <br />York Times regarding pavement management. Councilmember Starosciak commented on the <br />train issue, noting that she has seen people cross the railroad tracks at the end of Thornton to <br />get to and from BART. Councilmember Starosciak requested that as the TOD project <br />progresses, the Community Development Department have a plan for a better pedestrian <br />crossing for that location. <br />Councilmember Stephens commented that he attended the San Leandro Chamber installation <br />dinner, as did Councilmembers Gregory, Grant and Souza. Councilmember Stephens <br />reported that he made a $500 contribution from his Community Empowerment Funds to <br />Washington Elementary School. Councilmember Stephens commented on the City's <br />projected General Fund revenue shortfall of $4.5 million and what it will mean to City <br />projects and services. <br />Councilmember Prola commented that he contributed $1,250, the remainder of his <br />Community Empowerment Funds, to Building Futures with Women and Children. <br />Councilmember Prola commented that he attended a ribbon cutting ceremony on January 24 <br />for McNely Construction Company. He expressed support for the City's financial <br />participation in the 9t" Grade Campus Gym and renovation of the SLHS swimming pool. <br />Councilmember Prola reported that he attended the Chamber of Commerce installation, and <br />he urged the promotion of a good working relationship between business and labor for the <br />betterment of San Leandro. Councilmember Prola commented on the commitment by the <br />Home Builders Association of Northern California to cut its energy use in half by 2020. <br />Regarding the comments made by Mr. Perez, Councilmember Prola commented that he has <br />attended every meeting to which he has been invited, and he encouraged residents to call him <br />if they wished to have him attend their meetings. Councilmember Prola commented that he is <br />also in favor of hiring a crime prevention officer. <br />Mayor Santos clarified his position regarding support for repairing the SLHS pool. He <br />commented on the $383 million in federal funding in 2007 for at risk youth. Mayor Santos <br />commented on the crime problem and various ways to address it. Mayor Santos suggested <br />that the Council refer the issue of police staffing to the Finance Committee for review and <br />recommendation to the full Council. There was consensus of the Council to do so. Mayor <br />Santos congratulated Vice Mayor Grant and Councilmembers Souza and Starosciak for <br />conducting town hall meetings to address crime and safety issues. <br />13.
