IN THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO <br />RESOLUTION N0.2008-030 (1123) <br />RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE CALIFORNIA CHILDREN'S OUTDOOR BILL OF RIGHTS <br />WHEREAS, recent trends indicate that today's youth are increasingly disconnected from <br />nature and experiencing crises of mental and physical health, and <br />WHEREAS, the California Roundtable on Recreation, Parks and Tourism documents <br />numerous studies that have shown children who participate in outdoor recreational activities do <br />better in school, have better social skills and self-image, lead more fulfilled lives, and experience a <br />marked benefit to health concerns, and <br />WHEREAS, the California Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights is an initiative that states that <br />all children between the ages of four and fourteen should have the opportunity to participate in <br />outdoor recreational activities and discover their connection to California's history. These activities <br />include discovering California's past, splashing in the water, playing in a safe place, camping under <br />the stars, exploring nature, learning to swim, playing on a team, following a trail, catching a fish, <br />and celebrating their heritage. <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council is proud to hereby endorse <br />the California Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights, attached hereto as Exhibit A, and promote its <br />mission and featured activities for the children of San Leandro. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council hereby directs staff to continue their <br />Recreation and Cultural programming that supports and encourages outdoor activities for youth, <br />and supports efforts within the community to provide opportunities and programs that children may <br />experience the excitement and wonder of the outdoors and be inspired to appreciate and sustain our <br />natural and cultural treasures.. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of San Leandro does RESOLVE as <br />follows: <br />That said resolution is hereby approved and execution thereof is hereby authorized. <br />Introduced by Councilmember Stephens and passed and adopted this 7th day of April, 2008, <br />by the following called vote: <br />
