November 2008 Runoff Election 2 July 7, 2008 <br />office. Pursuant to City Charter Section 225(b), the Council must call a runoff election to <br />determine the successful candidate for City Council District 2. <br />Section 225(b) of the Charter also requires the Council to adopt an ordinance establishing a run- <br />off system for the conduct of the run-off election. Ordinance No. 2006-008, an Ordinance <br />Establishing Procedures for the Conduct of Run-Off Elections, was adopted on March 6, 2006. <br />This ordinance provides for the following: a runoff election among the two persons having the <br />highest number of votes for that office; consolidation with the Statewide General Election on <br />November 4, 2008; and the filing by candidates of a new candidate statement, not to exceed 200 <br />words. <br />Current City Council Policy <br />Section 225(b) of the Charter of the City of San Leandro requires a successful candidate for <br />elective office to receive at least 50% plus one of the votes cast for that office. In the event that <br />no candidate receives 50% plus one of the votes cast for that office, the Charter requires the City <br />Council to provide for arun-off vote to determine the person elected. <br />Previous City Council Action(s) <br />On March 6, 2006, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 2006-008, an Ordinance <br />Establishing Procedures for the Conduct of Run-Off Elections.
