City Council Rules and Communications Committee <br />July 3, 2008 <br />Page 3 <br />Mr. Jermanis reported that former Mayor Valance Gill served on the City Council for 24 years, <br />and his family has requested that a facility be named for him. <br />Committee Member Souza asked what kind of connections Mayor Gill had. Chair Santos <br />indicated that he was very involved in the development of the downtown. <br />Mr. Jermanis stated that staff will draft a modification to the policy, and try to identify an <br />appropriate facility for recognizing the contributions of Mayor Gill. <br />Committee Member Souza suggested having rooms at the Marina Community Center or other <br />similar facility named for local athletes that have achieved prominence. <br />Chair Santos suggested hanging pictures of past City Managers on the walls of the City <br />Manager's Conference Room. <br />Committee Recommendation: <br />The Committee recommends that the Policy for NaminglRenaming Facilities be revised to add <br />the requirement for a nexus between the individual and the facility/structure to be named, and <br />that staff identify potentially suitable facilities/structures which could be named for former <br />Mayor Valance Gill. <br />5. Public Comments <br />Linda Perry commented on the Democratic Party's request for participation at the Cherry <br />Festival, noting that the Party's primary focus is voter registration. Ms. Perry commented that <br />she purposely refrained from campaigning at the Cherry Festival, unaware that there was a Free <br />Speech area available. <br />6.
