DRAFT MINUTES <br /> Page 19 <br />City of San Leandro City Council, San Leandro Hillside Geologic Hazard Abatement District, and San Leandro <br />July 21, 2008 <br />Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting <br /> <br /> <br />Councilmember Prola read in the newspaper that the City of Seattle is considering imposing a <br />20-cent fee on plastic and paper bags at grocery, convenience and drug stores, and may ban <br />foam takeout food containers. Mayor Santos commented that in California, the law prohibits <br />charging for plastic bags. He indicated that the WMA will be discussing this issue at its next <br />meeting. <br />Mr. Jermanis suggested to the members of the Council that if they would like assistance in <br />distributing their 2-1-1 magnets, the Police and Recreation & Human Services Departments <br />could distribute them to board and commission members and to the public. <br />Mayor Santos commented on his Sister City visit to Ponta Delgada. He was given a silver <br />cigar case from the Mayor of Ponta Delgada, which he accepted on behalf of the City. The <br />Ghost program. Mayor Santos commented that he paid for the trip with his personal funds, <br />and he requested that the City Council Civic and Cultural Committee take up the issue of <br />funding for travel to Sister Cities. <br />djourned in memory of the <br />following individuals: Dona Spring, Berkeley City Councilmember; Janice Delfino, a <br />birdwatcher and environmentalist who was very involved in the 1992 referendum on the <br />Citation project at HeronBay; John Begier, a life-long San Leandro resident and brother of <br />James Begier; Harmon Bigelow, an Eastshore resident who helped to negotiate the closure of <br />Cleveland School; and Tony Hammons, a homeless man who lived and died on the streets of <br />San Leandro. <br /> <br />13.
