6. Discussion Regarding Maintenance Assessment District Tax <br />Board Chair Ray Davis asked about the concept to create an assessment district (City/School <br />District) to maintain facilities and make improvements. He asked about the process and if there <br />was a desire to follow up with this concept. Mr. Jermanis stated that the governance would need <br />to be addressed and clarified; he offered to come back to the committee at a future meeting on <br />structural options as to how a joint district could be organized. He said it could cover all <br />maintenance issues such as tree trimming and landscaping. He said there is a question as to if <br />enough funds can be generated to make an impact. Board Member Cutter asked about the dollar <br />amount generated and how that figure is established. Council Member Gregory stated that he <br />felt this was an inevitable concept; he stated the ongoing frustration by community members and <br />beautification days. He said this might be a good way to increase open space in town. <br />7. Public Comments <br />There were general comments thanking Mr. Jermanis for his service to the community and that <br />he would be missed as he retires. <br />8. Committee Member Comments <br />Board Member Hague stated her appreciation to the City for waiting to consider placement of a <br />parcel tax; she stated her appreciation for the efforts made at Burrell Field. <br />Council Member Gregory mentioned a potential planning grant to assist in the Shape Up San <br />Leandro program; he also mentioned the Two Angry Moms video which was shown at the <br />Farmers' Market. <br />Mayor Santos said there needs to be a formalized policy or program with the district regarding <br />the health and wellness issues. <br />Board Member Cutter asked if it was possible to have a booth at the Farmers' Market to <br />showcase the district's efforts at improving nutrition for children. <br />Board Chair Davis commented on the survey that was conducted and that many residents were <br />not aware of the good things happening in the schools; the communications committee recently <br />met and they need new approaches to inform the community; he would like to see use of the <br />City's newsletter or the recreation brochure. <br />Mayor Santos reported his attendance at the U.S. Mayors' conference; more mayors are getting <br />involved in educational issues. He would like to add the concept of at-risk children to an <br />upcoming agenda of this committee. <br />9. Adjournment <br />There being no further business, Mayor Santos adjourned the meeting at 5:11 p.rn. <br />
