Councilmember Gregory added he visited the Fremont Complex and it is
very expensive to run plus the fact that the DSFRC facility may not have the capacity.
Councilmember Grant stated if the investment is to be considered she would prefer the City own
the land not the building as to not take on the responsibility of the building maintenance. Grant
also stated she is not comfortable with the requested amount and DSFRC should raise $2.5
million. Both Mayor Santos and Councilmember Grant expressed their concern.
The Finance Committee was not prepared to make a decision at this time.
6. Discussion Regarding Redevelopment Agency Financial Assistance for San Leandro
Unified School District 9th Grade Campus Project
Jermanis stated that the San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD) has requested $2.3
millions towards the construction of the 9th Grade Campus. Prior to further discussion,
Councilmember Grant excused herself from the discussion as she lives within 500 feet of the
project. Jermanis stated fewer funds can be contributed if the City did not want to assist with the
construction of the gymnasium, only with the facade. Mayor Santos stated if the City
contributed towards the gymnasium, the City should have joint use of the facility. Jermanis
stated the City did not have to immediately provide the SLUSD with the $2.3 million, rather
assist through payments.
