interns are involved in prevention programs. They are supervised by licensed
therapists and are managed by May Cheng.
2) Physicians and dentists who volunteer their time for the Rotacare and Dental Clinics.
Anew Urgent Care Clinic is in the process of being opened. These professionals are
managed by May Cheng and Mika Hiramatsu.
3) Basic Needs volunteers who support food and clothing services. Several volunteers
have been with DSFRC for many years, having been clients at one time. Emile
Awwad manages these volunteers. He has established channels for obtaining
temporary volunteers, such as the court system, which directs citizens guilty of minor
infractions to perform community service, and from clients who trade service for food
stamps.
4) MSW interns who provide case management services to low income families at Davis
Street and two of the childcare centers. Michele Wilson, who is working at DSFRC
under a First Five grant, and Dawn Valadez, Development Director (and MSW), are
supervising the interns and developing a comprehensive case management program to
utilize them fully. When the Basic Needs Program Social Worker is hired, he or she
will take over supervision of the MSW's from Ms. Valadez and Ms. Wilson.
5) Some childcare centers have volunteer teaching assistants who are managed by the
site supervisors.
DSFRC has a Volunteer Handbook which is very well written but out of date (the one
given to us was dated 2004). Because so many of DSFRC's volunteers are interns that
come from area graduate programs, their turnover is planned (annually). This means that
recruitment and retention are not big issues. Mr. Awwad's programs see more turnover
as volunteers meet their court ordered service and leave, but his sources are stable and he
places the more temporary people into positions where they need minimal training and
can quickly be productive.
Though the volunteers work for different departments throughout the company and report
to different direct supervisors, we feel, and Ms. Padilla-Johnson agrees, that there should
be a single volunteer coordinator. She had originally envisioned that person being an
Americorp volunteer, but after two unsuccessful attempts at having someone from that
organization step, into a volunteer coordinator role, she is now seeking funding for a paid
staff position. The volunteer coordinator would manage distribution of volunteer staff,
make sure they get adequate training and direct supervision, and work to retain those
whose are not volunteering for a predetermined period of time. In addition, the
Coordinator would be in charge of setting up events designed to recognize and express
appreciation for the volunteers. We also see this person as handling the coordination of
the corporate sponsored volunteer recruiting program mentioned in item 2b under
Creating Strategic Partnerships.
sustainability Study: Davis Street Family Resource Center - 4/08 Page 44 of 96
