Kathy Ornelas reported that the airport's Noise Office held a meeting with corporate jet pilots
based at the North Field to help educate the pilots on the importance of considering the
neighborhoods near the airport for noise abatement. The pilots at the meeting were impressed
by the cooperative spirit between the community, the airport and its tenants. The Noise Office
also held a meeting with helicopter pilots based at the Hayward Airport with the same
educational objectives.
In September, Mayor Santos sent a letter to the FAA asking why they have discontinued plans
to install a second Instrument Landing System at the North Field. To date, no reply has been
received, and the Airport has not received a reply to their letter as well.
The South Field Group has not met since the last Committee meeting, so there was nothing to
report.
The Aviation Stakeholders Committee received updates on on-going projects. Kathy Ornelas
and John Manuel have volunteered to sit on a committee to review the scope of work to be
done by Environmental Sciences, the consultant which will be conducting the corporate jet
noise abatement compliance study.
4. Public Comments
Dave Needle, representing CLASS of Alameda, commented on the Business Jet Center
expansion project.
Francois Gallo wondered whether or not the Business Jet Center project would give the Port an
opportunity to get better compliance from business jet pilots. He suggested the Business Jet
Center should. be more involved with the North Field- Group.
Wafaa Aborashed asked the Noise Office for data on current jet operations and pollution levels
from general aviation.
Red Wetherill expressed concern regarding the condition of the older hangars at the North
Field.
John Manuel expressed concern about jets moving from the North Field to the South Field and
what impact this would have on residents in the Neptune Drive area. The odor of spent jet fuel
is still an on-going concern.
5. Committee Member Comments
Mayor Santos commented on the Noise Forum's 10th Anniversary event and recognized the
improved relations between the Port and neighboring communities over the past several years.
He asked the Noise Office to bring the presentation made at the anniversary dinner to the next
Committee meeting.
