The Port of Oakland is located 10 miles north of the heart of San Leandro. It occupies
19 miles of waterfront on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay. This seaport ranks among
the top 5 in the nation and top 20 in the world for annual container traffic.
The City is within close proximity to three major airports. Located just five minutes
away from San Leandro, the Oakland International Airport serves more than 9.8 million
passengers and handles more than 950 million pounds of cargo annually. The Oakland
International Airport is one of the busiest cargo centers in the United States, served by six major
cargo carriers. San Leandro is only 20 miles from San Francisco International Airport and 30
miles from San Jose International Airport.
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is a light rail system in the San Francisco Bay area that
serves San Leandro from two stations - Bayfair and Downtown. Downtown San Francisco is a
convenient 20-minute ride on BART. San Leandro's bus service is scheduled to complement
BART, providing easy, convenient travel and the ability to transfer to different forms of
transportation. San Leandro LINKS is a free shuttle linking San Leandro BART and the West
San Leandro business community. The shuttle provides an alternative mode of transportation
for over 20,000 employees in west San Leandro, helping to ease traffic congestion and improve
air quality. The shuttle runs every 15 minutes during morning and evening commute hours.
Educational Facilities
The City is served by two school districts. The San Leandro Unified School District is
composed of eleven public schools consisting of one high school, two middle schools and eight
elementary schools. A portion of the City is within the San Lorenzo Unified School District,
where two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school serve San Leandro
students. In addition, a number of parochial schools are located within the City limits and in
adjacent communities. Nearby higher education opportunities include California State
University, Hayward, Chabot College in Castro Valley, Mills College in Oakland, the University
of California at Berkeley and Stanford University in Palo Alto.
D-6
