CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br />Councilmember Gregory commented on the successful Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration on <br />January 19~'. He thanked Recreation and Human Services Director Carolyn Knudtson for <br />organizing the event and City Attorney Jayne Williams for her eloquent keynote address. <br />Councilmember Souza added her appreciation for the wonderful Martin Luther King event. <br />As a follow-up from the Facilities and Transportation Committee meeting, Councilmember <br />Souza requested a determination regarding the use of park impact fees, and the initial dog <br />park proposal by the Four Paws Society. She stated her support for tobacco licensing. <br />Councilmember Souza announced that the African American Business Council is holding a <br />Career Day next month, and is looking for sponsors. She suggested looking into the use of <br />RDA funds to assist the schools. <br />Vice Mayor Stephens commented that, on behalf of the Mayor, he attended the Wal-Mart <br />opening on Hesperian, attended a recognition event for the Lavender Seniors volunteers, and <br />provided the opening remarks at the Martin Luther King event. Vice Mayor Stephens <br />remarked that the MLK event was first rate. He noted that the school districts receive RDA <br />pass-through funds. <br />Councilmember Prola commented that on January 9, he took an aerial tour of the Marina in <br />an East Bay Regional Parks District helicopter, along with City Manager Hollister and <br />Councilmember Souza. He attended the Shoreline Citizens Advisory Committee meeting, <br />and was impressed with the expertise of the committee members. Councilmember Prola <br />reported that he also attended the San Leandro Education Foundation meeting and the Senior <br />Moment meeting at the Chamber of Commerce. He commented on two recent news articles: <br />one about buying local, and the other about a commuter benefits ordinance passed in San <br />Francisco. He suggested that the City Council Rules and Communications Committee might <br />want to consider a similar ordinance. <br />Councilmember Starosciak commented that she met with Rocky Fernandez, who is now the <br />president of the AC Transit Board of Directors. They discussed the loss of the 55 Bus Line <br />and the resulting lack of an east-west transit line in San Leandro, the Flex and LINKS shuttle <br />services, and the need for transit options for middle income residents and seniors. <br />Councilmember Starosciak reported that she attended the Shoreline CAC tour of the project <br />site and the MLK celebration, and thanked the staff involved in these events. She commented <br />on a letter from ACI regarding its proposed fee increase for recyclables, and asked the <br />Council to consider extending ACI service to the San Leandro School District, which is <br />currently being served by Waste Management. Councilmember Starosciak requested that <br />tonight's meeting be adjourned in memory of Father Mesrob Sarafian. <br />Councilmember Reed commented on the inauguration of President Obarna. She attended the <br />MLK celebration, and expressed appreciation to City Attorney Williams for her spellbinding <br />keynote speech. Councilmember Reed attended the Shoreline CAC tour; attended the Wal- <br />Mart grand opening, and met with the Bayfair Policy Advisory Committee, which presented <br />its goals for safety at the Bayfair BART station. <br />
