Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones 2 March 2, 2009
BACKGROUND
Analysis
Adoption of this ordinance is consistent with past practice in the City of San Leandro. In July
1994, the San Leandro Fire Chief recommended adoption of the maps proposed at that time.
This ordinance is an update to the prior action. It should be noted that in 1994, the maps did not
show any Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones within the jurisdiction of the City. The current
maps establish a small Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, limited to the eastern most streets
within the City.
The adoption of this ordinance will not result in any additional impacts to the citizens. Impacts
within the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone will be limited to new construction projects.
New projects must comply with requirements as set forth in Chapter 7A of the 2007 California
Building Code. Because Chapter 7A requirements only affect new construction, remodels and
additions to existing structures are not affected. The regulation establishes minimum standards
for the protection of life and property by increasing the ability of the building located in a Very
High Fire Hazard Zone to resist the intrusion of flames or burning embers projected by a
vegetation fire. The regulation requires Fire Resistive Materials on the exterior of the building
and closure of roof vents. The City of San Leandro's Building & Safety Services Division has
responsibility for enforcing building code requirements in Chapter 7 of the California Building
Code.
Current City Council Policy
N/A
Previous City Council Action(s)
N/A
City, Council Committee Review and Action
N/A
Applicable General Plan Policy
N/A.
Permits and/or Variances Granted
N/A
Environmental Review
N/A
Code Compliance Review
N/A
Board/Commission Findings
N/A
