Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council Meeting Page - 9 -
January 12, 1998
Council Member Young thanked the public who stayed so late in the
evening. She stated she would like to see this level of participation
on other issues before the Council. She suggested that Council be
responsive to the needs in District 6.
She expressed her concern with the Conditions requested by the Chamber
and noted she recognizes they may not be considered tonight, but perhaps
they could be considered later. She urged the audience to keep their
eye on the paper and participate in future Agenda items.
Council Member Lothrop stated she is concerned with what is
"substantive." To people in her District, these changes are more than
minor. She continued by stating District 6 is taking a lot of
development and redevelopment planned for the coming years. She, too,
stressed that people need to contribute and participate when these types
of issues come forward to the Council.
Mayor Corbett complimented staff on the many questions answered here
this evening. She, too, has been frustrated and has anguished over this
issue. She stated her concern with the continued health of the Westgate
Center and recognized that the MOU was agreed to by a previous Council.
She stated her concern with what to do with the Davis Corridor and added
that Council's consideration of a citizen advisory group to deal with
issues should be revisited, noting it has been discussed by Council
before. She added that she has had a great deal of respect for the
Council throughout this process but will be voting to approve the
Appeal, although she does wish the Westgate Center well.
The following Motions were then introduced:
Minute Order No. 98-1, Motion Approving/Denying Appeal by Daniel L.
Cardozo of Adams Broadwell & Joseph, Representing United Food &
Commercial Workers' Union, Local 870, and Marla Donati, et al., of
AR-97-16, of the Planning Commission's decision to uphold the
Administrative Decision of the Zoning Enforcement Official, Approving
a Zoning Application for Wal-Mart at West Gate Center, 1933 Davis
Street, San Leandro. (2781/2761)
The City Council denied the Appeal by Daniel L. Cardozo of Adams
Broadwell ~ Joseph. Representing United Food & Commercial Workers'
Union. Local 870, and Marla Donati, et al.. of AR-97-16, of the
Planning Commission's decision to uphold the Administrative Decision
of the Zoning Enforcement Official, Approving a Zoning Application
for Wal-Mart at West Gate Center, 1933 Davis Street, San Leandro..
M/S/C Galvan and Loeffler.
