Farrelly Pool Information and Options
General Information:
• The cost of maintaining Farrelly Pool without any use is $45,000 per year. The
additional cost of utilities for the summer is $23,000.
• Due to high fixed costs, opening a pool for partial operations does not provide
significant cost savings compared to full closure.
• A comparison of swim lesson registration at this time last year shows Boys and Girls Club
up 30%, SLFAC up 10% and Farrelly down 26% (which most likely reflects the concern
that the swim lessons may not be available at Farrelly and may make filling classes less
likely).
Swim Lesson Information:
• Swim lessons are our highest priority due to water safety for all ages.
• When a class is full, swim lessons recover direct costs.
• Morning swim lessons at Farrelly often run at less than capacity due to the time of day
and weather.
• Swim lessons are available at San Leandro High School pool, Bay-O-Vista, Boys and Girls
Club and SLFAC.
• Swim lesson fees are the same for all pools. Lessons have been increased in $2 to $5
increments every spring over the last several years. Swim lessons for this summer have
been published in the Spring and Summer Activity Guides and registration accepted for
all pools since April.
• Comparison of neighboring agencies swim lesson fees is listed on attachment A of this
report. San Leandro is higher than public agencies but lower than private clubs.
Swim Lesson Options:
• Raise swim lesson fees starting in the Fall so that all participants pay the same fee for
the same service.
Increase swim lesson fees at Farrelly $5 effective June 15Y. (Many people have already
registered so people would be paying different fees for the same service and paying
different fees across the City.)
Do not offer lessons at Farrelly as they are available at San Leandro High School pool,
Bay-O-Vista, Boys and Girls Club and SLFAC.
Recreational Swim Information:
• Recreational swim attendance/revenue is determined by weather.
• Recreational swim loses money at every pool.
• Evening recreational swim at Farrelly is more cost effective than day time; less time,
more people.
• Comparison of recreational swim fees at neighboring public agencies is listed on
Attachment A.
Recreational Swim Options:
• Do not offer recreational swim due to financial loss.
• Only offer recreational swim in the evening.
• Offer day time recreation swim for a shorter duration.
• Raise fee to $4 per person for Recreational Swims open for 3 hours or less.
