MINUTES Page 13 City of San Leandro City Council and San Leandro Redevelopment Agency Joint Meeting-May 18, 2009 Public Comments on Item 11.D.1: Stephen Cassidy, San Leandro resident, addressed the City Council, commenting on the Measure WW Ad Hoc Committee process, and the lack of opportunity for public input at the Committee's meetings. Mr. Cassidy commented that the City did not have the resources to maintain and operate the competitive pool. He commented that the San Leandro High School (SLHS) pool could be renovated for less money, and could be maintained through a joint use agreement with the School District. Mr. Cassidy suggested referring the matter to the Recreation & Parks Commission to study and formulate a recommendation on the use of Measure WW funds, prior to holding the City Council work session. End of Public Comments on Item 11.D.1 Councilmember Stephens suggested that the City may want to revisit the recommendations of the Aquatics Task Force, as the economics have changed since the Task Force made its recommendations. Councilmember Gregory commented that he looked forward to more discussion on the issue, and stated that he was thrilled that there was so much interest in pools expressed by the community. Councilmember Prola asked whether Measure WW funds could be used to renovate the SLHS pool, or for Farrelly Pool. Ms. Williams confirmed that WW funds could be used for renovating the SLHS pool Mr. Hollister stated that WW funds could not be used for maintenance or operating costs for Farrelly Pool. Councilmember Prola expressed disappointment that the Ad Hoc Committee discussions were not opened to the public. Councilmember Souza pointed out some of the differences between the SLHS pool and the proposed Washington Manor competitive pool. She noted that the Drowning Darryls currently use the SLHS pool, and the School District would need to commit to a long term agreement with the Ciry and work out an arrangement with the Drowning Darryls if the City were to renovate the pool. Councilmember Reed commented on the need to share more information with the public. She agreed with speaker Cassidy about the need to involve the City's Recreation & Parks Commission, and agreed with Vice Mayor Starosciak about the need to inform the public. Mayor Santos commented on the number of phone calls and emails he has received on this subject. Councilmember Prola stated that he was not opposed to the construction of the competitive pool at some time in the future. Council accepted the report by consensus.
