• Provide specialty educational materials and programs in science, environmental <br />studies, marine biology, ecology, and nature, due to proximity of the branch <br />location to the San Leandro Marina on San Francisco Bay. <br />B. Science Specialty Education Center and Special Library Services <br />San Leandro Bayside Education Center. As a result of the Needs Assessment, the City <br />will utilize the San Leandro Bayside Education Center at the Mulford-Marina Branch <br />Library for joint Library/School educational purposes. The Education Center will feature <br />materials, programs, activities, and exhibits designed to inspire a sense of ]earning, <br />appreciation, and understanding of science, nature, and the environment. The <br />comprehensive programs will meet the California and San Leandro Unified School <br />District Science Curriculum Standards for grades K-5. <br />Monarch Butterfly Program. The City of San Leandro Recreation and Human Services <br />Department has established a Monarch Butterfly Program at the Monarch Bay Golf <br />Course adjacent to the Mulford-Marina Branch Library. School classes from throughout <br />the City participate in this program, which begins right on site at the Branch Library. San <br />Leandro is an over wintering site for the thousands of migrating monarch butterflies <br />appearing along the California coast. Most over wintering sites in California are on <br />private property, however, the San Leandro site is available for class visits and public <br />viewing. <br />Migrating Birds Program. Over 150 geese migrate and land at Garfield School, the K- <br />5public school closest to the Mulford-Marina Branch Library. The school is currently <br />engaged in programs and activities studying geese and their migration. The Library and <br />the School will collaborate to provide materials, programs, and activities to support this <br />educational opportunity. <br />Bay Trail Field Trips. The San Leandro Shoreline Marshlands Bay Trail is along the <br />San Leandro Marina. This San Leandro Shoreline Marshlands Enhancement Project was <br />undertaken by the City of San Leandro to restore tidal action and enhance salt marsh <br />habitat in the historic Roberts Landing area. Muted tidal action was restored to North <br />Marsh and existing channels were enhanced in this marsh, and Roberts Landing Slough <br />and Bunker Marsh were hydrologically connected to San Francisco Bay to create a fully <br />operating tidal marsh. As part of this program, students can hike and explore, see the <br />bay, the plant life, wetland habitats, tidal life, native plants, the salt marsh harvest mouse, <br />shorebirds, waterfowl, and other avian species. Students will return to the Library for <br />programs involving, wildlife, bay ecology, water pollution, bay front preservation, <br />ecological systems, hydrology, vegetation and other educational experiences that will <br />stimulate and foster environmental, plant, animal and avian hands-on learning. <br />Collection of Subject Specialty Materials. As a result of the Needs Assessment, the <br />City will provide an extensive collection of library materials in all formats encompassing <br />Natural Sciences including, but not limited to Earth Science, Life Science, Botanical <br />3 <br />
