City of San Leandro
Civic Center, 835 E. 14th Street
San Leandro, California 94577
September 19, 2001
Jana Clarke
CA Department of Boating and Waterways
20fl0 Evergreen Street, Suite 100
Sacramento, CA 95815
Dear Ms. Clarke,
The City of San Leandro operates a-150 berth public facility for small pleasure craft.
There are currently three (3) abandoned recreational vessels within its jurisdiction. These
vessels pose a toxic hazard to the enviroiunent and are creating a blight upon the public
waterways.
Pursuant to the California Harbors and Navigation Code, after obtaining title to the
abandoned property for purposes of abatement, the City intends to use the services of a
private contractor, to remove these vessels from the public waterways and dispose of
them.
In the past year, the City has successfully utilized the services of Tiger Divers to dispose
of seventeen (17) abandoned vessels. This was accomplished by salvaging and towing
the vessels to a nearby launch ramp, removing all hazardous materials, and trailering the
vessels to a nearby waste transfer station.
The City of San Leandro is requesting financial assistance from the California
Department of Boating and Waterways to help pay the costs of the safe removal and
disposal of the three abandoned vessels that are currently within its jurisdiction as well as
those that may arise in the future. Thank you for your consideration.
Pat Egan
viarina S pe isor
Shelia young, Mayor
6
..;.v Council: Orv~af "OB" BadQer 30o Liaze~ ~uriene G Grant:
uarrv A.
