c. Palma Plaza: Senior Business Specialist Penaranda explained to the Committee that the
Redevelopment Agency is exploring providing assistance to the property of owner of
Palma Plaza to demolish and remove the freestanding shack shed building at the corner
of the shopping center.
Penaranda explained that the building has posed a constant nuisance with its various
Code compliance problems (i.e. Building, Fire, Health, Zoning, and Community
Compliance). The appearance of the detached building is poorly outdated, incongruous
and a detraction in comparison to the newer shopping center on the property. The
removal of the unsightly building and its replacement with landscaping and two new
parking spaces would be a significant improvement to the property.
Preliminary cost estimates for this work are approximately $35,000. Staff thinks the
benefit to the City may justify paying 100% of the cost. The Committee agreed that the
demolition of the building is a priority, however recommended the 75% Agency
contribution level.
d. Crystal Eagle Award: Business Development Manager Battenberg informed the
Committee that the Redevelopment Agency won the prestigious Crystal Eagle Award -
see handout attached and included in the packet.
e.
