CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> <br />Councilmember Reed attended a ribbon cutting for the Harambee Kinship Center, and she <br />read their wish list. She attended the renaming ceremony of the George D. Carroll <br />Courthouse and the Trivia Bee. Councilmember Reed commented on two school children in <br />Oakland that were struck by cars on the same day, and suggested there needs to be a proactive <br />campaign to draw more attention to the problem of motorist inattention near school crossings. <br /> <br />Vice Starosciak agreed with Councilmember Reed, commenting that there is so much more to <br />child safety than crossing guards, and broader discussions and broader solutions are needed. <br />She announced an AC Transit BRT meeting will be held at the Library this Thursday, and the <br />public should be encouraged to participate. Vice Mayor Starosciak commented that the City <br />is looking into the environmental impacts of the Kip Academy expansion. She commented <br />that she has been getting phone calls from people regarding the permit parking program at <br />Heron Bay, and the aggressive towing of vehicles. She encouraged people not to park in <br />Heron Bay. <br /> <br />Councilmember Prola attended the Lavender Seniors Aging in Place event; the San Leandro <br />Sports Foundation Comedy Night at the Englander; the San Leandro Education Foundation <br />meeting; the Davis Street Transfer Station Neighborhood Forum; the Chamber of Commerce <br />Industrial Roundtable; the Sierra Club Activist meeting; a lunch between Waste Management <br />and the Teamsters to celebrate the signing of a labor peace agreement; a Machinists Union <br />apprenticeship program, at which he spoke on the importance of political action; and a <br />meeting at the Registrar of Voters on instant runoff voting. Councilmember Prola announced <br />he would like to nominate Kathy Sanchez from the Marina Gardens Homeowners Association <br />to the Ad Hoc Citizens Budget Task Force. <br /> <br />Councilmember Souza attended the Trivia Bee and San Lorenzo Unified School District <br />Oversight Committee meeting at the new Washington Manor Middle School Gym. She <br />praised the City for its partnership on the gymnasium. <br /> <br />Councilmember Gregory commented that he got dunked at Roosevelt Elementary School <br />Fall Festival; attended a six-church collaboration cleanup event; a Safe Routes to School <br />meeting; a Bicycle-Pedestrian task force meeting; and an earthquake preparedness meeting <br />hosted by Senator Corbett. He announced there will be a San Leandro Sports Foundation <br />event at Burrell Field next Sunday. <br /> <br />Mayor Santos commented on the need for access through Heron Bay to the shoreline; funding <br />for Safe Routes to School; volunteer work performed by Kraft employees to benefit Davis <br />Street Family Resource Center; emergency preparedness; the Trivia Bee (his team made it <br />into a runoff for third place); and the sounding of the alerting and warning siren to <br />commemorate the Loma Prieta <br />would be adjourned in memory of Alana Williams, an 11-year old girl killed by a hit-and-run <br />driver in Oakland; Eugene (Gene) Souza, a retired City of San Leandro Street Maintenance <br />Worker; Edward (Ed) Fanucchi, a retired City of San Leandro Sanitation Operations <br /> <br />
