Hollister City Manager RESOLUTION SETTING FORTH THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO'S COMMITMENT TO OBESITY PREVENTION, AND ENDORSING THE HEALTHY EATING ACTIVE LIVING (HEAL) CITIES CAMPAIGN SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends that the City Council pass a Resolution supporting the Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Cities Campaign. BACKGROUND Cities and their residents face increased health care costs and diminished quality of Iife due to obesity. City leaders across California are addressing the crisis by implementing land use and employee policies which encourage physical activity and nutritious eating. While individual lifestyle changes are necessary, individual effort alone is insufficient to combat obesity's rising tide. Societal and environmental changes are needed to make significant change. The HEAL Cities Campaign is a partnership of the League of California Cities, the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, and the Cities, Counties and School Partnership. The Campaign works with California cities to adopt policies that will improve the physical activity and food environments for all residents. The City of San Leandro has several policies that support health in the work place and has sponsored or been part of a number of events that support a healthy community including: Senior Health Fairs; Family Health Fairs; Employee 10,000 Step Challenge and most recently the 50 Million Pound Challenge. Endorsing the HEAL Cities Campaign is one more way of working towards a healthier San Leandro community. Current City Council Policy NA Previous City Council Action(s) NA
