(B) Each hydrozone shall have plant materials with similar water use, with the exception of hydrozones
with plants of mixed water use, as specified in Section 492.7(a)(2)(D).
~C) At least 7~% of the toYalnu~mber trf plants in~nonaurf~rea~ ~tta11 require occasional, litfile ~~t i~ct
summer water. All species should be adapted to the clim~ite in-which they will be planted, as
documented by a published plant reference. if plants are given a range of water needs from "occasional
to moderate" for example, the landscape designer must determine if the plant will require either
occasional or moderate watering based on site, soil, and climate conditions and categorize the plant
appropriately. Sources used to determine climate adaptation and watering requirements may include:
1. Bornstein, Carol, David Fross and Bart O'Brien, California Native Plants for the Garden.
Qualifying irrigation designation: "occasional", "infrequent", or "drought tolerant"
2. East Bay Municipal Utility District's publication Plants and Landscapes for Summer Dry Climates.
Qualifying irrigation designation: "occasional", "infrequent" or "no summer water"
3. Sunset .Publishing Corporation Sunset Western Garden Book.
Qualifying irrigation designation: "little or no water"
Landscape Plantings in CA.
Qualifying irrigation desigp,ation: "Low'" or "V~ir;~ LrrW"
(D) Turf is not allowed on slopes greater than 25% where the toe of the slope is adjacent to an
impermeable hadscape and where 25% means 1 foot of vertical elevation change for every 4 feet of
horizontal length (rise divided by run x 100 =slope percent).
(E) Total irrigated areas speciC-edas turf shall be limited tq a maximum of 25°1 with recreational areas
exempted.
(€~ (F) A landscape design plan for projects in fire-prone areas shall address fire safety and prevention.
A defensible space or zone around a building or structure is required per Public Resources Code Section
4291 (a) and (b). Avoid fire-prone plant materials and highly flammable mulches.
{~} (H) The architectural guidelines of a common interest development, which include community
apartment projects, condominiums, planned developments, and stock cooperatives, shall not prohibit or
include conditions that have the effect of prohibiting the use of low-water use plants as a group.
(~} ~~ Plants shall be selected and planted appropriately based upon their adaptability to the climatic,
geologic, and topographical conditions of the project site. To encourage the efficient use of water
other reSatli'ees, the following is highly recommended:
1. protection and preservation of native species and natural vegetation;
z.
~~. selection of plants based on disease and pest resistance;
4: 3 selection of trees based on applicable local tree ordinances or tree shading guidelines; and
~. 4. selection of California r~ti've plants from local and regional landscape program plant lists using
local natural plant communities as models:
~. 5. use of the Sunset Western Climate Zone System which takes into account temperature, humidity,
elevation, terrain, latitude, and varying degrees of continental and marine influence on local climate;
~. C, recognize the horticultural attributes of plants (i.e., mature plant size, invasive surface roots) to
minimize damage to property or infrastructure [e.g., buildings, sidewalks, power lines]; ~o.allow the_fc
grow to their mature size within the space ai]©tted them to avoid shearing and topping and
7. consider the solar orientation for plant placement to maximize summer shade and winter solar gain.
S. avoid specifying turf in street medians, traffic islands or bulbc~uts:of any size unless irrigated.-with
subsurface or low volume irrigation
9. avoid installingt~trfon stapes exceeding I0:1 ~(htir;~ontai-to ~ei'tic~l) or l 0°/~
