Office of Senator DianneFeinstein
Fiscal Year 2010 Appropriations Request Form
Submit by Febntary 5, 6:OOPM Eastern Tune
Requesting EntitX: City of San Leandro
Requesting Individual: Mayor Tony Santos
Priorit 2 of 3 requests
Project Name: Public Safety Building Expansion
Amount Requested: $3,000,000
Bill:
A enc
Account:
Project Justification (4 sentences; 150 word limit): The communication center of the San
Leandro Police Department must be expanded to provide services to the citizens and police
officers now and in the future. Expanding technology, workspace ergonomics, accessibility, and
the increased staffing required to handle cellular 911 calls are a few of the critical reasons that a
new communication center is badly needed. Currently, cellular 911 calls are received at a local
Highway Patrol dispatch center before being re-routed to San Leandro. The City is seeking
federal funding assistance to will construct a 1,050 square foot addition to the existing Public
Safety Building for housing the communication center on the first floor, and add 1,050 square
feet of floor space to the second floor for other police functions.
Description of the Project (no limitj: The current Public Safety Building houses the City Police
Dispatch and Communication Center. Constructed in the 1960's, the 460 square foot floor plan was
originally designed for radio equipment, not the dual screen computer consoles and other
communications equipment utilized by today's police dispatchers. The San Leandro Public Safety
Building contains the communication center for the Police Department. Service demands,
including the answering and processing of cellular 911 calls, require that the center
accommodate additional dispatchers. New equipment, including seven work stations and the
floor space to effectively use the equipment cannot be accommodated in the existing facility.
Due to communication center's 24/7 responsibilities, expanding the existing space in place is not
a viable alternative.
The City is seeking federal funding assistance to construct a new communication center as an
expansion of the existing building away from the current center. The improvements would
include construction of a 1,050 square foot expansion on the ground floor for use as the
communication center with the required heating and air conditioning and electrical upgrades to
serve the new equipment. The additional second floor space will provide needed space to the
Investigation Section.
Follow enclosed Instructions.
