Office of Senator DianneFeinstein <br />Fiscal Year 2010 Appropriations Request Form <br />Submit by February 5, b:00PM Eastern Time <br />Requestin Entity: City of San Leandro <br />Requesting Individual: Mayor Tony Santos <br />Priorit 3 of 3 requests <br />Project Name: East 14`h Street Improvements <br />Amount Requested: $3,000,000 <br />Bill: <br />A enc <br />Account: <br />Project Justification (4 sentences; 150 word limit): The City of San Leandro is seeking <br />federal funding to assist with the design and construction of comprehensive pedestrian and <br />transportation improvements along the East 14`h Street corridor and to build on the success of <br />previous federal funding within this same corridor. These improvements would implement the <br />goals and policies of the East 14`h Street South Area Development Strategy. The project has been <br />divided in two phases: Phase 1's improvements would extend from San Leandro Boulevard to <br />145t1i Avenue; Phase 2's improvements would extend from 145`h Avenue to Hesperian <br />Boulevard. Proposed improvements for Phase 1 include: 1) widening sidewalks with ADA <br />compliant bulb-outs at intersections; 2) installing enhanced crosswalks; 3) adding one or two <br />traffic signals; 4) infilling with new street trees and other landscaping; 5) adding street furniture, <br />coordinated signage, and place-making elements; 6) installing enhance bus stops and shelters; <br />and 7) implementing traffic calming measures, such as narrowing travel lanes. <br />Description of the Pro~ei ct (no limit): Attracting new transit-oriented development to the East <br />14`h Street corridor is a high priority goal of the City of San Leandro. 111 2000, the City's <br />General Plan identified the corridor as a key "focus area" for major change ,and improvement. <br />The street is an auto-dominated <br />~. _. _. <br />-- <br />corridor that has experienced a -- ' -. <br />decline in private investment over "" <br />the years even though it is ~ " <br />surrounded by well-maintained <br />residential neighborhoods.
