The next step will be to "take this on the road" and in February they will <br />begin meeting with various local groups and organizations. <br />City Manager Hollister added that overall the public wants a balance of <br />community and services, adding that in order to make money and more <br />revenue the City must foster more businesses, good businesses, and <br />businesses that our residents will use. <br />Board member Mack-Rose thought the survey process was a great way to <br />engage the community. Ms. Diaz said that she would be glad to share <br />exercises used and process followed, which can be modified for the school <br />district. <br />3. Budget Updates <br />Cit~of San Leandro <br />City Manager Hollister gave a brief overview and status of the City's <br />budget. At this point in time, it is anticipated that the City will save <br />approximately $2.5-$3 million this fiscal year with hiring freezes, <br />golden handshakes; however, City revenues continue to deteriorate, <br />particularly sales tax revenue which is anticipated to be down 15%. The <br />City is running through their reserves, and they can't count on the <br />revenue measures and reserves needed to balance the budget. The City <br />has already reduced 12% or sixty-one full-time positions. Non-public <br />safety departments are being asked to cut their budgets up to at least <br />15% and public safety (police and fire) 5% or more, adding that the City <br />is considering placing a revenue measure on the ballot in November. <br />The committee discussed various ways the District could support the <br />City in this effort to educate the community on this fiscal crisis such as <br />updates included in school newsletters, and Teleparent messages, <br />noting that partnering with the City would have a positive outlook from <br />the community. <br />Board Chair Katz-Lacabe commented that there is an initiative being <br />submitted that would lower the threshold for passing a local school <br />parcel tax from two-thirds to 55 percent, adding that signatures are <br />needed and if anyone is interested in endorsing this initiative, he will <br />pass on the website. <br />• San Leandro Unified School District <br />Interim Superintendent Cathey shared the District's budget timeline. <br />The community is encouraged to attend a Special Board Workshop on <br />3 <br />
