CITY CAF
Jl
w. - Iv A L I F Q R N I A
~..
2010 City Council Election
Election Date Changed
San Leandro's General Municipal Election date has been changed from June to November of even-
numbered years.
Please note that there will still be an election on June 8, 2010. Statewide offices and propositions,
as well as County and special district races and measures, will be on the June ballot, so be sure to
vote on June 8.
Next General Municipal Election -November a, Zoio
The next General Municipal Election for the City will be held on November 2, 2010. The offices of
Mayor and City Council Districts 1, 3, 5 are up for election. See the San Leandro Council District
Mao for Council District locations.
The candidate nomination period for the November 2~d election will open on July 12 and close on
August 6, 2010.
A Netiv Voting Method -Ranked Choice Voting
Ranked Choice Voting will be used in the November 2, 2010 General Municipal Election to elect the
Mayor and City Councilmembers for Districts 1, 3 and 5. Ranked Choice Voting allows voters to
rank a first, second and third choice candidate for a single office. This makes it possible to elect
the Mayor and Councilmembers by majority vote, without the need for a separate runoff election.
San Leandro's City Charter requires a successful candidate to receive 50 percent plus one votes in
order to be elected. In the last two City elections, the general municipal election was held in June,
and if no candidate received more than 50 percent plus one of the votes cast for the office, a
runoff election was held in November between the two highest vote-getters for that office. Using
Ranked Choice Voting, San Leandro voters will only have to vote once-in November-for the
offices of Mayor and City Council.
Ranked Choice Voting is only used for the Mayor and City Council races, and does not affect the
election of County, State, federal or special district officials, or the approval or rejection of ballot
measures.
Information on how to use Ranked Choice Voting will be available here soon.
