IN THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO <br />RESOLUTION NO.2010- <br />RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE GOVERNOR'S PROPOSED CUTS TO CHILD <br />CARE SERVICES IN CALIFORNIA <br />WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro is committed to and supports the <br />development of young children and quality child care for children and their families in <br />San Leandro and surrounding cities; and <br />WHEREAS, the May Revision of the Governor's Proposed Budget would <br />eliminate full day and after school child care services to the neediest of children and <br />families throughout California; and <br />WHEREAS, in San Leandro, the proposed cuts would result in a loss of $7 <br />million in funding for the operation of child development services in two subsidized child <br />care centers and voucher programs provided by the Davis Street Family Resource Center <br />for over 850 children from 0-12 years of age from low income families living and <br />working in San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley, Ashland, and Cherryland; and <br />WHEREAS, with the elimination of child care for local working poor .and <br />families in job training, 436 working families would lose vital jobs in an already <br />desperate economy; 54 families would need to drop out of job training programs; and 12 <br />staff, including teachers, site supervisors, case managers, fiscal staff and overall <br />administration, would lose employment; and <br />WHEREAS, such and elimination would be detrimental to children, families and <br />the community, and create a ripple effect that would not be limited to just the child care <br />programs; and <br />WHEREAS, the proposed cuts would deprive learning and growth opportunities <br />for many families. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City of San Leandro <br />strongly OPPOSES the Early Childhood Education Budget reductions proposed in the <br />Governor's May 2010 State Budget Revisions. <br />Introduced by Councilmember and passed and <br />adopted this 21st day of June, 2010, by the following called vote: <br />Members of the Council: <br />AYES: <br />
