IN THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO RESOLUTION NO. 2010-082 RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE GOVERNOR'S PROPOSED CUTS TO CHILD CARE SERVICES IN CALIFORNIA WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro is committed to and supports the development of young children and quality child care for children and their families in San Leandro and surrounding cities; and WHEREAS, the May Revision of the Governor's Proposed Budget would eliminate full day and after school child care services to the neediest of children and families throughout California; and WHEREAS, in San Leandro, the proposed cuts would result in a loss of $7 million in funding for the operation of child development services in two subsidized child care centers and voucher programs provided by the Davis Street Family Resource Center for over 850 children from 0-12 years of age from low income families living and working in San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley, Ashland, and Cherryland; and WHEREAS, with the elimination of child care for local working poor and families in job training, 436 working families would lose vital jobs in an already desperate economy; 54 families would need to drop out of job training programs; and 12 staff, including teachers, site supervisors, case managers, fiscal staff and overall administration, would lose employment; and WHEREAS, such and elimination would be detrimental to children, families and the community, and create a ripple effect that would not be limited to just the child care programs; and WHEREAS, the proposed cuts would deprive learning and growth opportunities for many families. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City of San Leandro strongly OPPOSES the Early Childhood Education Budget reductions proposed in the Governor's May 2010 State Budget Revisions.
