to the School District by the 2002-2003 school year. Cherry City is a proposed <br />development near the Downtown Area (near Wilson Elementary.) Over 330 ~ <br />new three to five bedroom single family homes are planned, and the school <br />district expects a significant portion of those households to have a high student j <br />yield. <br />Notably, the three elementary schools located closest to the Downtown core <br />-Wilson, McKinley, and Washington elementary schools -experienced the larg- <br />est San Leandro increase in student population, and are expected to continue <br />increasing at a high rate. <br />This trend correlates to information from residential real estate sources, who <br />have stated that the majority of newly purchased homes in the Downtown area <br />are to first time buyers, many with new families. Many of these buyers are initially <br />drawn to San Leandro for the location and affordable home prices.
