COPS IN SCHOOLS <br />NARRATIVE ADDENDUM <br />The San Leandro Police Department, San Leandro, County of Alameda, California, is <br />located within the San Francisco Bay Area. It borders the City of Oakland in the East Bay. The <br />City of San Leandro has a population of approximately 79,600 people. The population <br />breakdown is as follows: 14.5 percent Hispanic; 13.5 percent Asian; 5.7 percent Black; 65.6 <br />percent White; and .7 percent Other. <br />The San Leandro Police Department currently employs two School Resource Officers <br />who are assigned to three middle schools and two high schools within the City of San Leandro. <br />This is in partnership with the San Leandro Unified School District and the San Lorenzo Unified <br />School District. <br />The City of San Leandro has two school districts within its city limits. The San Leandro <br />Unified School District consists of eight elementary schools, two middle schools and two high <br />schools. The unincorporated area of San Lorenzo borders the city limits to the south. The San <br />Lorenzo Unified School District overlaps the city limits of San Leandro and encompasses two <br />elementary schools and one middle school within the City. <br />The approval of this grant request would allow .the San Leandro Police Department to <br />increase the School Resource Officer Program by one police officer for a total of three full-time <br />police officers assigned to the schools. <br />Problem Identification and Justification <br />Problem Identification: John Muir Middle School, Bancroft Middle School, <br />Washington Manor Middle School, San Leandro High School and Lincoln High School all <br />experience a variety of crime.
