Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - January 16, 1996 Page - 19 -
CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS (continued)
without understanding what has taken place. He said he can no
longer allow the Council and Manager to be attacked in such an
unfair manner and hopes the leadership in the community will
spend time focusing on issues and less time on negative
criticisms. He said the Vice Mayor serves at the pleasure of the
Council, and it is important that appropriate forums be used to
discuss problems. He said he is still leery and saddened but
hopes we can put these events behind us.
H. Mayor Corbett applauded the resiliency and stick- togetherness of
the Council. She said they have proven that no matter what
happens, they will stick together as a team and move forward.
She accepted Vice Mayor Kerr's apology and the fact he did not
mean to state that the Council Members are rubber stampers. She
said he has done an excellent job as Vice Mayor. She is as
concerned as the rest of the Council about his comments. She
said what is important is that the facts speak for themselves.
There's a handful of people in the community who have banded
together to downplay and distort what has gone on -- positive
accomplishments. She said San Leandro is a leader in Alameda
County in business development and retention, continues to have
a good housing -to -job ratio, and is a desirable place to live and
bring business to. She said the community expects the best and
has a can -do attitude. She said the overwhelming majority of
people in the community look forward to moving forward and doing
good things. She said the statements in the newspaper were
false. She said she hopes the Council can have a forum equal to
those who made the negative comments. She said she is convinced
Vice Mayor Kerr will give 150% toward working toward issues.
11.
