Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and Page - 7 -
Redevelopment Agency Meeting - September 3, 1996
Council Member Galvan asked why there were no businesses or DBA
members represented during this meeting. He noted the lack of
business benefit data. He said the original intent of the rink was
to help the downtown. He encourages downtown promotional events, not
the rink. Nanci Klein said the downtown is considered important to
the entire community and economic - development improvements to the
area are key to the overall health of the City. She noted that
Community Services and Economic Development staff are looking into
sponsorships for several events.
Council Member Glaze said he does not support the ice rink in the
downtown. He is in favor of supporting all businesses, not just in
the downtown. He said there is a need to promote the downtown during
the holiday season, not just the rink. He favors providing
opportunities for all families and children to participate. He urges
economic development throughout the City, both long and short term.
Mayor Corbett agreed with the need for long -term programs, sports
facilities, and other activities to benefit youth and families. She
said many businesses had contacted her about the positive impact and
benefits from the rink last year. She suggested the issue be
discussed during the Business Walk and results brought to the next
meeting. She suggested voting on the issue within a week; she is
willing to aim for funds and look into business interest.
Council Member Galvan stated he was looking for hard, business data
due to the extent of the financing. He thinks businesses may not be
able to help pay for the activity. He said that if businesses came
forward and were willing to assist, he might reconsider.
Mayor Corbett supported the idea of taking the issue to the community
for input. She suggested they put off the decision for a week in
order to look for support.
Nanci Klein noted that the DBA was not made aware of the meeting due
to the issue being preliminary and that staff was requesting
direction.
Council Member Loeffler stated he does not feel there is tremendous
support. He moved that the rink not be supported this year, funds
remain allocated for downtown holiday activities and that other
activities be identified.
Council Member Young asked for clarification on the budgeted amount.
Mayor Corbett asked the City Council if they would object to her
looking into funding for the activity. Council concurred.
