Minutes - City of San Leandro City Council and Page - 8 -
Redevelopment Agency Meeting - October 7, 1996
3.1.6 Valerie Blackfall, 14744 Washington Avenue, said she is a
resident of the St. Moritz and is quite aware of the noise and
other issues. She said Mr. Sullivan has gone above and beyond
in dealing with the issues at the complex. She said there is
no way to identify who is a resident. She would like to
retain the back exit. She said the gate has been there for 20
years and has been working. She uses the Harold Avenue exit
and said speeding cannot occur due to the configuration. She
said public access should be maintained.
3.1.7 Robert Barry, Harold Avenue, said the area is disruptive and
filled with trash. He said he has seen children and teens
jumping the gate. He said there is excessive noise and
traffic problems. He said he would not have purchased in the
area if he had known of the problems. He noted that it took
two months for an abandoned car to be removed from the street.
3.1.8 Vivian Denew, 14744 Washington Avenue, said many of the
residents are seniors who walk and they are using the gate;
she also uses the gate. If it gets closed, they will have to
cross in front of an exit, and this poses a sight problem.
She said she is offended by the Harold Avenue neighbors'
comments. She urged the Council to retain the Harold Avenue
exit.
3.1.9 Doris Villareal, 14779 Harold Avenue, submitted letters from
residents for Council review. She said she is outside on her
porch throughout the day. She said there is only one elderly
woman and seven children with mothers who use the gate in the
morning. She said children are throwing trash, and she has
witnessed verbal abuse of neighbors by tenants. She said the
pedestrian gate should be closed.
3.1.10 Betty Ackle, 14786 Harold Avenue, said they have had to put up
with noise, traffic, and trash. She said she has lived there
for 43 years. She noted that there is a developmentally
disabled resident in the area. She said the gate should be
closed.
3.1.11 Carol Avilla, Manager of the St. Moritz, said residents have
asked her to represent them. She said an elderly woman does
use the gate. She said she is offended by the neighbors'
accusations. She said she knew of an altercation between a
tenant and a Harold Avenue resident regarding a newly painted
car; the issue had been resolved as far as she knew. She said
the residents at the complex are hard - working people, not drug
users. Many senior citizens have lived there for many years.
She acknowledged there may be problems. She said she has not
received any direct contact to date and would be available to
help resolve the issues.
