photographs of typical locations. Table 1 provides a summary of field collected data and a
compendium of existing bike lanes in San Leandro. The City currently has a total of 7.4 miles
of Class II bike lanes.
Figure 3 is the Existing Bikeway Map. In addition to showing the types and locations of
existing bikeways, Figure 3 also locates major bicycle activity centers such as schools, parks,
and libraries. The Bay Trial is a regional hiking and bicycling trial around the perimeter of San
Francisco and San Pablo bays. In San Leandro, the main component of the Bay Trail, the
"spine trail ", is fixed along the shoreline, supported by "spur trails" that extends to points of
interest such as the Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline and the San Leandro Marina. The Bay Trail
is also shown in Figure 3.
1.6 Gaps
The Bikeway Map shows that San Leandro currently lacks a continuous bikeway system that
provides connecting bikeways through the City. The existing bike lanes are sporadic and do
not significantly contribute to safe or convenient bicycle use. Table 1 identifies existing street
segments with bike lanes in one direction but not the other such as San Leandro Boulevard
between Marina Boulevard and Washington Avenue, and segments without bike lanes in
between segments with bike lanes such as Alvarado Street between Thornton Street and Marina
Boulevard. Besides gaps within the existing bikeway network, bikeways are also lacking on
arteriallcollector streets that feed onto residential streets. For example, Farnsworth Street and
Manor Boulevard serve as collectors of many residential streets but do not contain bike lanes
nor are designated as bike routes.
On a citywide level, no bikeway exists for a continuous ride from east to west that would
connect the regional parks. No north -south bikeway exists through San Leandro that connects
Oakland to San Lorenzo.
1.7 Constraints
San Leandro has relatively few physical obstacles to accommodating a bicycle infrastructure.
8
