• All bike lanes (Class II) should be designed to meet Caltrans standards, which require a
minimum width of 4 feet and 5 feet if adjacent curbside parking exists (see Figure 11).
• Minimum widths for bike routes (Class III) are not presented in the HDM, as the
acceptable width is dependent on many factors. The Master Plan does require travel
lanes on existing local access roads, residential collectors, and residential arterials to be
at least 9, 10, and 11 feet wide, respectively, in order to be designated as a Class III
bike route. The Master Plan also requires travel lanes on newly constructed local
access roads to be at least 10 feet wide and residential collectors to be at least 11 feet
wide in order to be designated as a Class II1 bike route. All other existing or newly
constructed streets must provide lanes at least 12 -foot wide to be designated Class III
bike routes. Table 5 presents recommended average daily traffic (ADT) and speed
thresholds for Class III bike routes.
Table 5
RECOMMENDED STANDARDS FOR CLASS III BIKE ROUTE
I Ciirb Caiie;Width (ff); -`_v ADT Tiavel Speed ' - f
12 under 5,000 under 25 mph
14 5,000 - 20,000 25 - 35 mph
16 over 20,000 over 35 mph
'Source: Fehr & Peers Associates.
Support Facility Standards
• Bicycle loop detectors should be installed on the bikeway system at all signalized
arteriaUarterial and arteriaUcollector intersections.
• All public facilities such as libraries, government centers, parks, schools, and transit
centers should provide bike racks, preferably in a covered location.
• All places of employment should provide covered bike racks or bike lockers at the rate
of 1 space per 30 full -time employees. Any development or redevelopment with over
50,000 square feet of Gross Leasable Area (GLA) or 150 employees should be
required to provide at least one shower and locker facility per 100 employees.
• A signing and pavement marking system should be developed to identify and guide the
bikeway network according to Chapter 1000 of the Highway Design Manual. A
summary of Chapter 1000 signing and pavement marking standards is provided in
Table 6.
32
