Section 7 -5 -805: PURPOSE. The purpose of this Article is to promote public safety and welfare <br /> by establishing minimum standards for structural seismic resistance in unreinforced masonry <br /> wall buildings in order to reduce the risk of death or injury that may result from the effects of <br /> earthquakes on such buildings. <br /> Compliance with these standards will not necessarily prevent loss of life or injury or prevent <br /> earthquake damage to rehabilitated buildings. <br /> This Article provides systematic procedures and standards for identification and classification for <br /> unreinforced masonry wall buildings based on their present use; and, where appropriate, the <br /> strengthening or demolition of the building. <br /> Section 7 -5 -810: SCOPE. <br /> (a) General. The provisions of this Article shall apply to all buildings constructed with <br /> unreinforced masonry walls as defined herein, with the exception of: <br /> 1. Detached one or two family dwellings and detached apartment houses <br /> containing less than 5 dwelling units and used solely for residential purposes. <br /> 2. Federal or State government owned buildings. <br /> 3. Warehouses or similar structures used solely for storage. <br /> 4. Any building designated as an historical building by action of the City <br /> Council, pursuant to Title IV. Chapter 26 of this Code. or by official action of <br /> the federal or state government; provided, however, such building shall be <br /> subject to the requirements of the State Historical Building Code (S.H.B.C.) <br /> established under Part 8, Title 24 of the California Code or Regulations; and <br /> provided further, that any such building so designated as an historical building <br /> subsequent to January I, 1991; shall be subject to inspection by the Building <br /> Official for the purpose of determining whether the building is seismically <br /> safe to occupants and the public. <br /> (b) Provisions Also Covered In Code. When provisions of this Article and provisions <br /> of the Building Code both apply, the provisions of this Article shall govern. <br /> (c) References To The Building Code. When provisions of this Article refer to the <br /> Building Code it shall mean the 2009 International Building Code promulgated by <br /> the International Code Conference as adopted and amended by this City. <br /> Section 7 -5 -815: DEFINITIONS. <br /> Unreinforced Masonry Wall: Shall mean a masonry wall that relies on the tensile strength of <br /> masonry units, mortar and grout in resisting design loads, and in which the area of the <br /> • <br /> 7 <br />
