The Chamber /City- sponsored initiative, Sustainability Circles, with seven San Leandro
industrial companies, with interactive training by and for the companies' owners /managers
is in its last stages. As stated before, it provides technical development services to establish
sustainable processes and products with a profitable return on investment. Natural
Capitalism and New Voice of Business assist companies to catch the fast - growing trend in
production requiring that they provide products that demonstrate, from parts to production
to end product, that the processes are carried out in an environmentally sustainable manner.
This initiative serves to implement key policy goals of the City's Climate Action Plan
related to promoting energy efficiency in our industrial sector on an ongoing basis.
The October San Leandro by Design Forum will feature the success stories of the
companies that have completed the program. In fact, early reports indicate that energy
efficiency initiatives carried out by several of the companies have already saved significant
resources and dollars.
4. Careers in Manufacturing
> Objectives for High School Students:
• The opportunity to observe production companies in operation;
• To learn directly from production employees and management what education
and skills are necessary for a career in manufacturing;
• To learn that these careers can offer good to very high wages;
• To learn that there are career ladders that lead to further skill development and
management opportunities.
> Draft program elements - "Teachable Moments" - developed by working committee of
Industrial Council volunteers:
• Computer -aided production machinery operation;
• Quality control;
• Production process management;
• Safety management;
• Developing sustainable processes;
• Workplace problem- solving.
> The committee, working in partnership for the 2010 school year with a local youth services
organization:
• Secured an agreement with San Leandro High School to carry out the
program and assist with the selection of the student participants;
• Secured local company agreements to participate in the program, with the
added goal of ultimately providing career opportunities for the students;
• Will work to establish a partnership with San Lorenzo USD; and with the
community college district to provide a bridge for the students to get the •
necessary education and training.
San Leandro Chamber of Commerce — 104 1 City Contract — Industrial Program — I st Quarter Report Page 3
