CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
MEMORANDUM
DATE: January 18, 2011
TO: Stephen L. Hollister, City Manager
VIA: Lianne Marshall, Assistant City Manager
FROM: Rayan Fowler, Information Services Manager
SUBJECT: WEBSITE ENHANCEMENT REQUEST
Mayor Cassidy met with the City Manager and staff to present suggestions on the City's website. The
suggestions included increasing the visibility and ease of finding the Council Agenda, clarifying
functionality of features such as San Leandro Assist and E- Notify, and obtaining community input. The
following specific recommendations were made:
1. Add Council Agenda on Quick Links
2. Highlight days which have events on the Main Page calendar
3. Add the Council agenda link on the Residents and Business links menus
4. Add the City Council Agenda to the How Do I Find menu
5. Add a link to the Agenda from the Calendar description
As there was no change in functionality or cost incurred to implement recommendations, staff has
accomplished items 2 -5. Staff recommends Item 1 be reviewed with the City Council Rules and
Communications Committee as this is a change in functionality.
Item 1, Quick Links, is a tool automated by the internal program. The top 8 pages that receive the most
hits are automatically placed in Quick Links by the program. This changes daily and automatically.
Although staff does not manage Quick Links, we have the ability to force a topic. To date, we have
only done so to promote a topic for a limited duration. For example, we have forced Business License
Renewal to provide easy access for San Leandro businesses to renew their business licenses on -line and
reduce staff time in processing paper renewals. Once Business License Renewal season has ended, the
Quick Link will no longer be forced.
Community input has always been a high priority. Since launching the new website we have increased
visits by 35 %. We continue to receive feedback in a variety of ways. Users submit website feedback
forms regularly. We also receive community and business feedback through staff interactions as well as
City Comments. All comments and suggestions are reviewed by the department responsible for the page
in question and Information Technology.
One of the most important features of the new program is the ability to make changes and enhancements
immediately. The website is a work in progress and improves continually thanks to suggestions and
recommendations made by all. If the Committee approves, staff will implement Item 1, adding Council
Agendas to the Quick Links.
