5. Public Comments
None
6. Committee Member Comments
Vice Mayor Reed asked about the focus of the Civic and Cultural Committee, wondering if
the Committee routinely reviews City plans for cultural events, like Cinco de Mayo. Staff
replied that the Committee has asked for special reports in the past, such as a report on the
previous 100 Anniversary Cherry Festival planning. However, event plans are not typically
reviewed by the Committee. Carolyn Knudtson was able to report that Recreation and
Human Services staff is reaching out to community groups to seek sponsorship of a Cinco de
Mayo event for this May. Due to budget cuts, most cultural events have been suspended
unless private funding can be provided. Vice Mayor Reed indicated she may be able to seek
sponsorship for a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event in 2012.
Vice Mayor Reed asked about the Sister City and Friendship City relationships the City has
around the world. Staff gave a very brief overview of when each relationship was
established and interactions with each city since then. A history of the relationships is
attached.
7.
