Sister City and Friendship City Histories <br /> Ribeirao Preto, Brazil <br /> 1962 Sister City relationship established under the stewardship of the San <br /> Leandro Town Affiliation Committee. <br /> August 1965 Mayor Welson Gasparini of Ribeirao Preto visits San Leandro as part of a <br /> State Department Tour. <br /> November 1966 Medical supplies are sent from San Leandro to Ribeirao Preto. The <br /> supplies were collected by the Alameda- Contra Costa Medical Society to <br /> be used by the Social Assistance Service of Ribeirao Preto. <br /> December 1968 Mayor, a Councilmember and a Secretary of State from Ribeirao Preto <br /> visit San Leandro. A tour of the City was given and a small luncheon was <br /> held, which was followed by visits to Marina and Pacific High Schools. <br /> November 1969 San Leandro City Councilmember Bill Suerstedt and community members <br /> visit Brazil, including Ribeirao Preto. <br /> January 1971 Students from Ribeirao Preto visit San Leandro and make a presentation to <br /> the City Council. <br /> 1972 Students from Ribeirao Preto visit San Leandro and a special dinner was <br /> held in their honor. Among the students was Plauto Garcia Leal, Jr. <br /> 1991 Plauto Garcia Leal, Jr. returned to San Leandro in an official visit as a <br /> Ribeirao Preto City Councilmember. <br /> Fall of 1998 Plauto Garcia Leal, II1 (Neto), son of now City Councilor Plauto Garcia <br /> Leal Filho, comes to San Leandro as a Rotary- sponsored exchange student <br /> November 1998 Letter to Mayor is received from the Mayor of Ribeirao Preto, inviting an <br /> official visit to their city. <br /> April 7, 1999 City Councilor Leal makes an official visit to San Leandro while his son is <br /> attending San Leandro High School through an exchange student program. <br /> A community reception was held. <br /> October 1999 City Councilmember Surlene Grant visits Ribeirao Preto and presents a <br /> Key to the City to Mayor of Ribeirao Preto. Following her visit <br /> memorabilia items were sent to San Leandro for a future Sister City <br /> display. <br /> Note: Ribeirao Preto has a street, a square and a district of their city named after San Leandro. <br /> 5 <br />
